Smart Export Guarantee
What you need to know about SEG
The SEG (Smart Export Guarantee) launched on 1 January 2020 and is a government-backed initiative. The SEG requires some electricity suppliers, known as SEG Licensees, to pay small-scale generators, known as SEG Generators, for low-carbon electricity which they export back to the National Grid, providing certain criteria are met.
Who is the scheme for?
- Anyone with an installation of one of the following technology types up to a capacity of 5MW, or up to 50kW for micro-CHP.
- Solar photovoltaic (solar PV)
- Wind
- Micro combined heat and power (micro-CHP)
- Hydro
- Anaerobic digestion (AD)
Installations must be located in Great Britain and meet the applicable eligibility criteria

Once you are up and running we can provide you with all the information to make your SEG application.
How does the scheme work?
SEG Licensees determine the rate, contract length and other terms which SEG Generators will receive. SEG tariff rates must always be above zero. SEG payments are calculated by using export meter readings. SEG Generators are paid by their chosen SEG Licensee for the electricity which they export back to the National Grid.
Generators thinking of applying for a SEG tariff should shop around to see which tariff is best for their individual circumstances. The Ofgem page for Generators has more information on how to apply and the specific eligibility criteria. You can also find the list of current SEG Licensees which Ofgem publish annually.
How do I apply?
The first step is to choose who you want to choose to sell your energy to. This will depend on who can offer you the best rate. Often your current supplier will offer a slightly better rate than their competitors.
Our league table reveals which suppliers are offering the best rates. Note that the best rate may not always mean the best energy package. Solar Energy UK recommends shopping around for the best deal.

We update our Smart Export Guarantee league table frequently, but if you spot an error, please let us know.
Often it is worth moving energy supplier to gain a better export rate. We will always advise on the best options at the time during our consultation. Each energy company has an online form to complete, and for this you will need your MCS certificate and other installation details which we will provide you.
This process is something the property owner has to do themselves, but we are always on hand to help.
