Are solar panels worth it? How to get the best from your solar investment
If you’re thinking about adding solar to your home or business, you already know that it’s a significant investment. So, the next thing you’ll likely want to know is, ‘are solar panels worth it?’
The quick answer is yes. For most UK homeowners, solar panels are absolutely worth it. But the details matter, and the returns you get depends on a handful of factors that are worth understanding before you commit.
Let’s look at the figures and factors that will affect your return on investment…
The upfront cost: What you’re actually paying for
A typical home solar installation in the UK costs between £5,000 and £12,000, depending on the size of your system and whether you include battery storage. To break that down:
- A solar-only system (panels and inverter, no battery) typically costs £5,000-£8,500 for a 4kW system suited to a 3-bedroom home
- Adding battery storage brings the total to £8,000-£12,000+, depending on battery capacity and brand
One important point on cost: until 31 March 2027, solar panels, batteries and labour are all zero-rated for VAT in the UK. That single tax break can take up to £3,000 off the cost of a typical system – so if you’re considering solar, now is a particularly good time to act.
The government’s Warm Homes Plan also offers financing options for eligible homeowners, and there are now more zero-/low-interest finance products available through installers than at any previous point. Going solar has rarely been more accessible.
The returns: How much can you really save?
Here’s where the numbers get interesting. A well-sized solar system in the UK typically delivers annual bill savings of up to £1,000 and potentially more, depending on your usage and tariff. Combine that with export payments (and more on those shortly), and your system will likely pay for itself within ten years, maybe 12 at most.
Solar panels are warranted for 25 years and typically have a ‘real world’ lifespan of 30+ years. With recent advances in technology, some panels now have 40-year warranties. And once you’ve passed the payback point, you’re generating electricity for free. So, over the full lifetime of your system, you could save more than £50,000.
That’s a return on investment of 300-500%.
The Smart Export Guarantee: Get paid for what you don’t use
When your panels generate more electricity than your home is using – e.g. on a sunny day when everyone’s out – that surplus energy flows back to the national grid, and under the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), energy suppliers are legally required to pay you for what you export.
SEG rates vary by supplier and tariff type. Fixed rates currently average around 13p per kWh, while dynamic or time-of-use tariffs can pay 25-30p per kWh during peak demand periods.
What you earn from exporting electricity to the grid goes as a credit on your energy bill. In winter, you can use those credits to pay for electricity, when what you generate doesn’t quite cover your usage. For an average 4kW system, export payments can add up to £300 per year on top of your bill savings.
But adding battery storage can make even more of a difference…
Why battery storage is the real game-changer
If you don’t have battery storage, any solar electricity your home doesn’t use immediately is exported to the grid. Your household then draws from the grid in the evening at the full retail price.
If you add battery storage to your solar set-up, you can keep that surplus instead, to use in the evening when your panels aren’t generating – effectively replacing 25p grid electricity with electricity you’d otherwise have exported at a fraction of the price.
On smart time-of-use tariffs such as Octopus Flux, the opportunity goes further still. Your battery can charge overnight at off-peak rates (as low as 15p per unit between 2am and 5am) and then either power your home in the evening or export back to the grid during peak demand windows, when rates are highest. Managed well, this can generate meaningful additional income on top of your bill savings.
Battery prices have also fallen significantly – nearly 90% in the decade 2010-2020 – making the economics more attractive than ever. Many homeowners now install battery storage with their solar panels, rather than choosing to add it later.
What affects your return on your solar investment?
Your return on investment will depend on several factors, most of which a good installer will assess during a free home survey:
- Roof orientation and shading. South-facing roofs generate the most electricity and offer the strongest returns. East- or west-facing roofs are perfectly viable, typically producing around 10-20% less than a south-facing equivalent. North-facing roofs are less ideal, but can absolutely still produce enough solar energy to make a real difference. Shading is often the bigger variable. Trees, chimneys, and neighbouring buildings can all reduce output. A proper survey will identify these upfront so your expectations – and your system design – are based on reality, not optimistic averages.
- Your electricity usage patterns. The more electricity you use (particularly during daylight hours) the greater your savings. If you’re at home during the day, have electric vehicles, heat pumps, or simply high general usage, you’ll typically see shorter payback periods. Even if you’re out during the day, battery storage largely closes that gap by capturing your solar generation and making it available when you need it.
- How long you plan to stay in your home. Solar is a long-term investment. The payback period for most UK homeowners sits between 8 and 12 years, so if you’re planning to move in the near term, the financial case is weaker – though it’s worth noting that solar panels can add value to your property. Research suggests they can increase a home’s value by approximately 4%, and more generally, homes that are energy-efficient are particularly attractive to buyers.
Beyond the numbers

- Consider battery storage from the outset. If you have battery storage installed with your solar system, rather than adding it on later, your long-term returns are better. Plus, the upfront cost difference is smaller than many people expect
- Monitor your system through the app or platform your installer provides. Tracking generation and usage helps you optimise your patterns and spot any issues early
- Review your energy tariff regularly. Time-of-use tariffs are increasingly rewarding for solar households, particularly those with battery storage
